Welcome to this morning’s edition of “
First To Know,”
a series in which we keep you in the know on what’s happening in the
digital world. Today, we’re looking at three particularly interesting
stories.
First Look at Windows Phone 8
Microsoft has shared some details about the new version of its mobile platform,
Windows Phone 8 or Apollo.
The new version will support four different screen resolutions,
multicore processors, removable microSD cards and NFC communication.
Unfortunately, there’s still no word on when, exactly, Apollo might show
up on the market.
Skype for Windows Gets Updated With Full HD Video Calls
Skype for Windows has been updated to
version 5.8, bringing support for full HD video calls, Facebook integration and group screen sharing. The new version is available
here.
Megaupload Founder Refused Bail
A New Zealand court
refused bail to Kim Dotcom (a.k.a. Kim Schmitz), founder of online file-sharing site
Megaupload, which has been taken down due to a piracy investigation.
“I will not run away. I want to fight these allegations on a level
playing field. I have three little children. My wife is pregnant with
twins. I just want to be with them,” said Dotcom, but it was not enough
to persuade the judge. Dotcom was returned to custody, awaiting a
hearing on an extradition application by the United States.
